Six years without seeing her daughter in Cuba, and this was the most heartbreaking reunion

A Cuban who emigrated six years ago returned to the island as a surprise, just one day before her daughter's birthday, and the moment of their reunion was captured in a video that went viral on TikTok with over 250,000 views.

The woman, identified on the platform as Diamond (@roymerismilanes1), posted the clip on March 14 with the description: My surprise arrival in Cuba after 6 long years, one day before my daughter's birthday.

The reunion was carefully planned with the help of the family that looks after the girl on the island.

Aunt had told the little girl that she would receive a video message from her mother to celebrate her birthday, but instead of a screen, she appeared in person.

The girl's reaction was immediate: she broke into tears upon seeing her mother in front of her when she was only expecting a recorded message.

"Don't cry my love, don't cry, don't cry my life," the mother is heard saying as she hugs her daughter through tears.

The video also features the meeting between two cousins, Briana and Valeria, who apparently did not know each other or had not seen each other in a long time, further reflecting how emigration hinders the development of bonds between generations of the same family.

At the end of the clip, the mother summarizes in a few words what that moment means: "Life, how beautiful, damn, how many years without seeing you. Oh, my beautiful girl, poor thing, thank you, Lord."

User comments on the platform reflect the collective pain that these types of videos evoke. "My God, what a surprise, poor thing, may God bless her," and "How that girl suffered" are some of the reactions left by followers.

This reunion takes place within the framework of the most severe migration crisis in recent Cuban history, driven by decades of communist dictatorship that have plunged the island into a spiral of scarcity, blackouts, and political repression.

Between 2020 and 2024, more than 1.4 million Cubans left the island, leaving behind fragmented families where children are cared for by grandparents or other relatives while parents seek opportunities abroad.

Only in 2024, more than 250,000 Cubans officially emigrated according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Information, with independent estimates raising the figure to over half a million.

As of 2023, 38% of Cuban families had one or more members living outside the island, according to statements from the Deputy Director General of Consular Affairs of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Laura Pujol.

Since 2025, TikTok has become the platform where the Cuban diaspora documents these reunions, which go viral due to their authentic emotional impact: surprises at airports, homes, and birthday parties, with children who cry or run to their parents after years of separation.

The video of Diamond garnered 14,000 likes and 586 shares, figures that reflect the resonance these stories have within a community shaped by distance and nostalgia.
