The Cuban Karel Díaz González, a resident of Hialeah, was arrested this Sunday accused of stabbing a man with a kitchen knife, in what the police considered an apparently random attack.

Díaz González, 46 years old, is facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon, according to the arrest report.

The violent attack occurred around 8:18 p.m. at block 767 of West 2nd Avenue, where Hialeah Police officers responded following a report of a stabbing.

The officers found the victim sitting on the ground, while family members were applying pressure to multiple stab wounds on the back of the head and on the body in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

According to the police report, the victim -identified as Osvaldo Fuentes by media outlets- stated to the investigators that he did not know his attacker and was unaware of the reason for the assault. “I don't know why this happened... I don't know him,” he affirmed.

The injured person was transferred to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries and had to undergo surgery for a wound to the lower back of the neck.

At the scene, the investigators followed a trail of blood that led them to a knife sheath in the front yard of a nearby residence, and then to Díaz González's apartment at 128 West 7th Street, where they found blood at the entrance and on the handle of the front door.

Upon opening the door, the suspect had visible blood on one ear and, according to the report, "spontaneously stated that he had been attacked first."

However, surveillance footage from the area where the attack occurred contradicts his version of events. The recordings show Díaz González conversing with the victim under an awning before entering his apartment; shortly after, he exits the residence with a large kitchen knife in an "attack position" and runs towards the man, who tried to flee.

The weapon was later found underneath a parked vehicle nearby.

After being informed of his rights, Díaz González refused to make a statement.

The accused appeared before a judge on Monday, who appointed a public defender and ordered that he remain in custody without bail, a decision that reflects the seriousness of the charge and the risk he poses to the community, according to the ongoing legal proceedings.

In another alarming case reported recently in Miami, the Cuban boxer Frank Zaldívar Santiesteban, 29 years old, was arrested for a stabbing incident that left a man seriously injured.

Another Cuban was arrested in January in northwest Miami-Dade for a brutal attack against his brother-in-law with a knife, an incident that alarmed the community due to the violence of the assault, which endangered the victim's life. Last July, in the city of Hialeah, police took into custody a homeless man for stabbing another.
