A homeless man was arrested on Tuesday after carrying out a brutal knife attack that left another person with severe lacerations on the face and arm, according to the Hialeah Police Department.

The alleged attacker, identified as Santos Gustavo Moreno Córdova, 58 years old, faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly attacking another man with a knife following a heated verbal dispute.

Death threat and knife attack

The events took place just before 6:00 PM on Tuesday, when Moreno Córdova and the victim became embroiled in a verbal argument, the reason for which has not yet been disclosed by authorities.

According to the arrest report accessed by Local 10, during the altercation, Moreno Córdova allegedly threatened his interlocutor by saying: "I'm going to kill you."

He immediately pulled out a knife with which he stabbed him in the left arm and then in the face, causing deep wounds to the victim's chin, neck, and arm.

After stabbing him, Moreno Córdova chased him down the street before fleeing.

Arrest at the bank and transfer to the hospital

After receiving the incident report, officers from the Hialeah Police Department began a search for the suspect.

He was located shortly thereafter in the parking lot of a Chase Bank branch located at 18255 NW 57th Avenue, where he was arrested without incident.

For its part, the injured person was assisted by personnel from the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department and urgently transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition, according to authorities.

Subsequently, the injured party identified the attacker in a photographic lineup.

"Egotistical statement" and refusal to cooperate

According to the police report, during his interrogation, Santos Moreno Córdova denied having injured the victim and provided what the officers described as a "selfish statement," showing no remorse and failing to present a coherent account of the events.

Until Wednesday afternoon, he remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, with no bail set at that time, according to prison records.

Concern over street violence

This new incident reignites concerns about street violence in Hialeah, a densely populated city facing multiple social challenges, including the rising number of homeless individuals and conflicts linked to mental health and drug addiction issues.

The police have not yet revealed whether Moreno Córdova had a criminal record or psychiatric history, though the investigation remains ongoing.

The Hialeah Police Department reiterated its commitment to public safety and reminded that any threat involving a knife is considered a serious crime, even if it does not result in the victim's death.

Moreno Cordova is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days for the formal arraignment and bail hearing.
