The Cuban content creator Elainne became the voice of thousands when she posted a phrase on Instagram that is spreading across social media: "Marco Rubio is my shepherd".
Elainne is an entrepreneur and has her own beauty salon in Havana. In several social media posts, she clearly expresses her political stance, including details like wearing a red cap with the inscription Make Cuba Great Again, a direct nod to the MAGA campaign.
Her admiration for the U.S. Secretary of State was evident in her recent video, where she paraphrased the biblical Psalm 23, replacing God with Rubio.
The phrase quickly spread through the comments. "Marco Rubio is our shepherd, and we shall not want", wrote a follower. However, another one pointed out the differences on this topic on the island and added: "Is Marco Rubio your shepherd? Goodness!"
A comment summed up the phenomenon in Cuba with two words: "Parallel realities."
Elainne's publication blends humor, fervor, and social critique in a Cuba where the scarcity of electricity, fuel, and food is part of the everyday landscape.
The enthusiasm of the Cuban entrepreneur is not coincidental. On May 20, Cuba's Independence Day, Rubio published a video in Spanish directed specifically to the people of the island.
It was the first time he did it as Secretary of State and offered a "new relationship" with the United States, in addition to the 100 million dollars in food and medicine that will be channeled through the Catholic Church or other charitable groups, without going through the government.
"Cuba is not controlled by any revolution. Cuba is controlled by GAESA," Rubio stated in that message, which prompted an immediate reaction from Díaz-Canel and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, and even a mocking video from the regime itself.
For Elainne and many other Cubans, Rubio and President Donald Trump could bring the change that Cuba needs to end the dictatorship, revive economically, and become a prosperous country again.
The phrase makes it clear that for those who survive each day in the crisis of Cuba, the figure of Marco Rubio has become a symbol of hope and the conviction that change will come, sooner or later.
