The ambassador of Cuba in Mexico, Eugenio Martínez Enríquez, participated this Wednesday in a discussion panel organized by the Anti-Fascist Communist League in Mexico City to celebrate the 95th birthday of Raúl Castro, where he stated that the Cuban government has control over the situation on the island.
The event, titled "Imperialism is Fascism: 60 Years of Cuban Resistance", was held at the Benny Moré Mexico Cultural Center and was organized to commemorate the 95th birthday of the former leader, which was celebrated last Tuesday.
The Embassy of Cuba in Mexico shared excerpts from the diplomat's speech via its official account on X under the hashtags #CubaNoEstáSola and #95DeRaúl.
The ambassador's statements starkly contrast with the documented reality in Cuba: power outages lasting up to twenty hours a day, extreme shortages of food, fuel, and medicine, and an unprecedented massive wave of emigration.
On the same day as Raúl Castro's birthday, Havana woke up to pot-banging and citizen protests, an image that by itself contradicts the narrative of control projected by the diplomat from Mexico.
Martínez Enríquez has built a history of controversial statements since arriving in Mexico in January 2026. In April, he stated that in the event of a possible military intervention by the United States, "many Cubans will fall, but Cuba's option is to resist," according to statements that generated significant backlash.
In February, he concluded a public event in Mexico City with the phrase "Cuba's option is resistance and victory," and in March he denied that humanitarian donations sent from Mexico were being sold in state-run stores in Cuba, describing the accusations as "lies and disinformation."
In May, according to the newspaper La Jornada, the ambassador stated: "We will defend the just cause of Cuba to avoid falling under the control of Washington."
The context in which the tribute to Raúl Castro was held is particularly revealing. On May 20, the acting U.S. Attorney General, Todd Blanche, declassified in Miami a federal indictment approved by a grand jury from the Southern District of Florida against the former ruler for the shooting down of planes from Brothers to the Rescue in 1996, which resulted in the deaths of four Cuban Americans.
The charges include conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens, destruction of aircraft, and four individual counts of homicide. The indictment is based on a recording from June 1996 in which Raúl Castro himself describes giving the order for the shootdown. Marco Rubio and federal prosecutors labeled him a “fugitive from U.S. justice”.
While the regime organized tribute events in Cuba and abroad under the slogan #95DeRaúl, with messages from Miguel Díaz-Canel and Manuel Marrero, the Cuban people responded with pan-banging protests. That is the "situation under control" that the Cuban ambassador is celebrating from Mexico City.
