A freight train coming from the railway terminal of Angosta, in the Mariel municipality, derailed this morning in Guanajay at 7:20, on a section of railway track within that municipality of the Artemisa province.

The train was headed to Camagüey and was carrying cargo containers, including units from the international shipping company CMA CGM. The images of the accident, taken by Liz Daniela Rodríguez, show several flatcars overturned or tilted off the tracks, near the Guanajay railway station.

"The damage from the incident is being assessed for both the machinery and the railway, and no human injuries have been reported," reported journalist Yarima Córdova Escobar, who disclosed the accident.

The line where the derailment occurred connects the intermodal terminal of Angosta —located in the Mariel Special Development Zone— with Havana and the rest of the national railway network. This line is operated by Ferromar S.A., a company established in 2021 that transports approximately 70% of the cargo generated by that free zone, including containers from international shipping lines.

The accident interrupts a key logistical route between the port of Mariel and the interior of the country, with impacts on the supply chain still to be determined.

The incident this Friday comes just nine days after another derailment of greater magnitude: the Santiago de Cuba–Havana passenger train derailed on June 3 at kilometer 669 of the central line, near the town of Omaja, in Las Tunas, with about 900 people on board and no injuries reported.

Cuba has a growing record of railway accidents attributed to the deterioration of infrastructure, technical failures, and operational issues. In 2025, there were at least nine derailments across the country, including one in Camagüey with 18 injuries in May, another in Matanzas with three injured and seven cars off the tracks in August, and others in Las Tunas, Villa Clara, and the Hershey line.

In October 2025, the Holguín–Havana train with 577 passengers derailed in Bartle, Las Tunas, with no injuries reported, and in November the Havana–Sancti Spíritus train also derailed in Villa Clara, again with no casualties.

Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage to the rolling stock and the railway track in Guanajay, and as of now, no official report has been provided regarding the estimated time to restore traffic on that section.
