A Cuban identified on TikTok as Norelys (@aitanaeitana24) shared an emotional video of her return to Cuba on Sunday, June 21, where her whole family was waiting for her on the street to greet her with heartfelt hugs.
"And yes, my moment has arrived," the protagonist wrote as a description of the 39-second clip, which captures the exact moment when her loved ones surround her upon arrival.
In the background, "Cuba, bella island" plays, the anthem of Orishas featuring Gente de Zona, Leoni Torres, Isaac Delgado, Buena Fe, Descemer Bueno, and Laritza Bacallao, whose lyrics seem to be written for this moment: "I bring a rusty heart; I need a spark / My soul needs a transfusion, blood of my land / I return to the cradle that saw my birth."
The choice of that song is not coincidental: it encapsulates in just a few verses what millions of Cubans feel as they have spent years away from the island and their families.
Norelys's video joins a growing trend on TikTok, where emigrated Cubans document their family reunions with a frequency and emotional intensity that resonate with the entire diaspora.
In recent weeks, a Cuban woman returned unexpectedly after seven years without seeing her cousin, another almost jumped out of the car upon arriving home, and on June 23, another Cuban featured in a similarly heart-wrenching reunion after four years of separation.
Behind each of these videos lies a story of forced exile: between 2021 and 2024, over 1.79 million Cubans left the island driven by the economic crisis, chronic blackouts, shortages of food and medicine, and the political repression of the regime.
That demographic outflow has left 38% of Cuban households with at least one member living abroad, making family separation a daily reality for millions of people.
Returning is not easy: tickets exceed $1,000 and in 2025 only 228,091 emigrants visited the island, a drop of more than 66,000 people compared to the previous year.
That scarcity of returns makes each reunion, like Norelys being welcomed on the street by her loved ones, carry the weight of all the lost time.
"Back to the refuge that soothes the pain / And I return to the memory of first love / What I was, what I am, and what I will be for my beautiful island," concludes the song she chose to accompany that moment that, for her and for those who saw her arrive, said it all.
