The U.S. Department of State announced on Thursday that it will make available an additional 250,000 units of the so-called "Patriot Passport," a special edition commemorative document launched in celebration of the country's 250th anniversary of independence. This information was confirmed in a statement from the Office of the Spokesperson.
The decision responds to what the State Department characterized as an "overwhelming demand" since the launch of the passport, the first edition of which began to be issued on July 6 at the Passport Agency in Washington, D.C. That initial run was approximately 25,000 copies, which quickly sold out.
The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, endorsed the expansion through his X account, where he described the document as "a physical piece of our national identity, a reminder that wherever you are in the world, you are an American."
What is the "Patriot Passport" like?
The commemorative design features a portrait of President Donald Trump, taken during his second inauguration ceremony, accompanied by text from the Declaration of Independence, a golden flag inscribed with "Freedom 250," and an illustration of the Founding Fathers signing the document that gave birth to the nation.
Inside, Trump’s signature appears in golden letters, while the back cover features the 1777 American flag, with the number 250 in the center of the thirteen original stars.
Despite its special design, the document maintains the same cost as a conventional passport: 130 dollars, with no additional fees. It also retains the same security measures and validity as a regular passport.
The State Department reminded that this passport can only be requested through an in-person appointment. It is not available by mail or through online processes.
Availability nationwide
The national expansion will begin on August 8 with special application days in cities such as Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, New Orleans, New York, Centennial (Colorado), and Stamford (Connecticut).
Subsequently, the State Department plans to extend the availability of the document to the 27 passport agencies across the country throughout the month of August.
The initiative marks a historic milestone in the history of the United States: it is the first time a sitting president has been featured in an American passport.
Historian Edward Kolla, a professor at Georgetown University and an expert on the history of passports, described the measure as "absurd" and stated that he is not aware of any other country whose passport features the image of a sitting head of state.
The decision has also sparked criticism among Democratic lawmakers. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated that Trump is "too busy trying to put his face on everything," while Representative Mike Levin labeled the design as "a distraction."
Political debate and its impact among Cubans
The "Patriot Passport" is part of a series of initiatives launched by the Trump administration to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States and to strengthen national identity. Among other initiatives are the new 100 dollar bills that will bear the president's signature, and the U.S. will begin minting a dollar coin featuring Trump's face.
The document has also sparked reactions within the Cuban-American community. Recently, a Cuban residing in the United States announced that she would renounce renewing her passport due to the presence of Trump's portrait, which generated an intense debate on social media about the symbolic significance of the design and the relationship between national identity and political preferences.
