The Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez stated this Friday that "the greatness and legacy" of Fidel Castro will endure the passage of time and the criticisms from his adversaries, in a message particularly aimed at the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and sectors of the Cuban exile community in South Florida.
Rodríguez made the statements in a post on X, where he accused those in the U.S. government and Florida who challenge the legacy of the deceased dictator of being "vengeful and opportunistic."
The greatness and legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz will not be surpassed by time or by the hatred of a few vengeful and opportunistic individuals in the US government, such as the Secretary of State, and in South Florida,” he stated.
The chancellor also accused Castro's critics of attempting to "intimidate" those who study and follow his thoughts, amidst the official campaign launched by the Cuban government for the centenary of his birth.
Rodríguez also stated that the legacy of Castro remains evident in the expressions of "love and solidarity" towards Cuba that, he claimed, are articulated by millions of people in various countries.
In contrast, he once again blamed Washington for a large part of the difficulties faced by the Cuban population.
According to the official, the U.S. government "insists on suffocating us and causing immense damage and suffering to Cuban families."
The chancellor concluded his message by once again elevating the figure of Castro, whom he described as a "paradigm" for those who defend "peace, independence, humanism, social justice, solidarity, and anti-imperialism."
The statements come after Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío also publicly confronted Marco Rubio and claimed that history will remember Fidel Castro for his "immense contribution."
Fernández de Cossío presented the former leader as a figure who sought "a better world" and contrasted him with the current political climate in Washington.
The verbal offensive from Cuban diplomats responds to the strong criticisms made by Rubio against Castro.
The Secretary of State described it as "a complete failure," except —as he stated— in destroying Cuba and impoverishing, imprisoning, and killing part of its population. He warned those who intend to follow this model that they could end up doomed to the same failure.
