Matanzas has incorporated two new electric hearses to strengthen its funeral services, a sector that faces operational limitations amidst the transportation crisis, fuel shortages, and the prolonged blackouts affecting the province.
The official newspaper Girón reported that Governor Marieta Poey Zamora confirmed on Monday the arrival of the vehicles and stated that the measure “responds to sensitive social needs, prioritizing respect in the most difficult times.”
The cars were delivered by the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) through the Transport Development Fund, according to official information, and are now part of the vehicle fleet designated for funeral services in the province.
The introduction of electric vehicles brings back to the forefront the issue of their operation in an area that experiences frequent power outages.
The report from Girón acknowledged that the announcement has sparked questions on social media regarding the feasibility of these media outlets amid the energy crisis.
However, this is not the first time that the arrival of electric vehicles in Matanzas has sparked such reactions, as in March, the introduction of new forms of transportation for social services generated criticism precisely due to the prolonged blackouts.
On that occasion, it was reported that there was a combustion hearse and two electric delivery vehicles intended for other services.
The use of electric vehicles to meet social needs has spread to other provinces.
A few days ago, Guantánamo received 20 electric cars to transport hemodialysis patients, as part of a national plan that includes 400 units of this type for renal patients. Matanzas had previously received another 10 vehicles under that program.
The commitment to electric mobility has also reached the funeral services in Havana, where 15 electric hearses began operating at the end of 2025.
In that case, the authorities noted that the charging infrastructure was equipped with solar panels, storage systems, and an emergency generator as backup.
