A man lost his life at dawn this Saturday in Palmetto Bay after the pickup truck he was driving violently collided with a flatbed semi-truck on U.S. 1, one of the busiest thoroughfares in South Florida, as confirmed by the Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 6:37 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Southwest 184th Street in southwest Miami-Dade.
According to Local10's report, a Dodge pickup truck collided head-on with a flatbed semi-trailer, which triggered a small fire in the vehicle's engine compartment.
Surveillance cameras installed in the area captured the exact moment of the impact. The footage, shared by Telemundo 51, starkly shows the moment when the Dodge Ram crashed into the truck's platform, highlighting the severity of the collision.
"The impact caused a small fire inside the pickup truck. The man driving that Dodge Ram died at the scene," reported Telemundo 51, citing the FHP.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene of the accident. The authorities have not publicly revealed his identity. In contrast, the operator of the semi-trailer emerged unscathed from the collision, as confirmed by the FHP agents who responded to the location.
As a result of the incident, authorities closed U.S. 1 between Southwest 183rd and Southwest 186th streets for several hours to allow for investigation and cleanup of the scene.
The route, also known as South Dixie Highway, connects downtown Miami with the Florida Keys and accommodates a high volume of heavy vehicle traffic daily, making it an especially dangerous corridor.
Such fatal accidents are not uncommon in the county. In April of this year, a fatal collision between a car and a bus in Miami-Dade also led to a temporary closure of roads in the area. Months earlier, in January, an accident in Miami resulted in one death and necessitated the closure of a highway.
And in May, a video was circulated of an incident in which a Cuban mother died in an accident, whose driver was later identified.
The FHP continues to lead the investigation to determine the exact causes of the crash and whether there was any traffic violation that contributed to it. The county statistics reflect the seriousness of the issue: in 2025, Miami-Dade recorded between 255 and 257 fatal collisions, with between 271 and 273 deaths on its roads, according to local data, making the county one of the most dangerous in the state in terms of road safety.
"The identity of the deceased driver has not been released," specified Telemundo 51, as the investigation continues.
