A Spanish content creator shared a video on TikTok this Sunday, recounting her mother's tough reaction to her relationship with a Cuban man, and the response from thousands of users left her speechless: the majority sided with the mother.
Melanie Vidal, known on social media as @meloviajo, posted a 44-second clip that garnered over 7,400 views, 376 likes, and 268 comments within just a few hours. In it, the young woman describes what happened during a family meal where the topic of her Cuban boyfriend, Yainer, a musician from Havana, came up again.
"This video might be the most personal one I will ever make, but I'm feeling a bit at my limit," Melanie begins in the recording.
According to the account, he told his mother that Yainer had undergone surgery and that everything had gone well. However, her response was a list of objections: that the young man has no education, that his physical limitation prevents him from making efforts, and that he will not be able to find work in Spain.
The conversation ended with a phrase that Melanie repeated verbatim: “I just hope you don’t make the mistake of marrying him.”
The content creator acknowledged that the criticism from strangers on the internet doesn't affect her, but her mother's words are a different matter. "I can hear it from 10,000 people on TikTok and it won't bother me, but what my mother says affects me," she confessed, before seeking advice from her community.
The users' response was overwhelming and, for many, surprising: the comment that resonated the most was "Listen to her," referring to the mother.
The story of Melanie and Yainer has been followed by thousands of people since 2023. Their long-distance relationship went viral in April 2026, when she traveled 17 hours from Spain to Havana to reunite with him, a video that received over 110,600 views in less than 24 hours.
On June 19, Yainer proposed during a sunrise trek in Viñales, just three months after they met.
In August, Melanie announced that she was cancelling the in-person wedding planned in Viñales for December, not due to a breakup, but to opt for a faster legal route: marriage by proxy in Spain. The plan involves Yainer granting a special power of attorney—which must be legalized by MINREX if signed in Cuba—to a representative in Spain who will act on his behalf before the Civil Registry. After the ceremony, the couple plans to apply for family reunification.
It is precisely in that context where the new video takes on greater emotional weight. The mother's opposition is not just a family opinion.
Melanie closed the video with an open question to her followers: "I don't know if you've experienced a similar situation. If you have any advice, how would you handle it?"
