The Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas (UCLV) announced this Friday the passing of Dr. C. Carlos Alberto de León Benítez, a tenured professor in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and a university educator for more than four decades.
The institution announced the news on Facebook via an institutional condolence card, without disclosing the cause of death.
Dr. de León Benítez dedicated his professional life to teaching and research in the field of electrical systems, machines, and drive systems, an area in which, according to UCLV, he "made significant contributions."
He was the coordinator of the Master's in Electrical Engineering and a member of the academic committee for the Master's in Energy Efficiency, two of the most significant graduate programs at the faculty.
As a tutor and co-tutor of the doctoral program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, I guide the training of hundreds of professionals throughout their careers.
Among her documented mentoring roles is a master's thesis from 2018 on energy savings in hydraulic systems using centrifugal pumps and variable frequency drives, as well as a diploma project from 2015 on the use of photovoltaic energy at UCLV.
His scientific production covered high-impact topics for the Cuban energy reality: renewable energy sources applied to hospital services, harmonic propagation in low voltage electrical systems, and energy analysis of centrifugal pumping systems, with publications in national and international journals.
At the XX International Symposium on Electrical Engineering held at UCLV in 2023, he presented works on the design of thermal solar systems for hospital installations and on the energy matrix of Villa Clara with a focus on renewable sources.
UCLV emphasized that "his academic and human legacy endures in the university community and in those who had the privilege of sharing with him," and extended its condolences to family, friends, and colleagues.
This loss adds to a series of deaths that have affected the Cuban academic community so far in 2026.
In February, UCLV mourned the passing of Professor Emeritus Alberto Casiano Averhoff Casamayor, 85 years old, who dedicated more than four decades to economics and cooperativism.
Months later, in June, the same institution was again in mourning for the passing of Dr. C. Alina Hereira Díaz, a full professor and founder of the Center for Applied Chemistry Studies.
These losses occur against a backdrop of a profound economic and energy crisis that severely affects Cuban educational institutions, limiting resources and complicating academic operations throughout the country.
