Eduardo “Eddy” Ceballos, creator of the satirical channel Despingovery Channel, completed 100 days in prison in Cuba on Wednesday without a trial date, while his family demands that the process move forward with “guarantees, speed, and transparency.”
“For Eddy Ceballos, who has been incarcerated for 100 days today, it has felt like an eternity. Hope, anguish, uncertainty, and pain define his days; without freedom, without work, without family,” wrote his mother, Marieta Pérez Alfaro, in a post on Facebook.
Ceballos was arrested on June 1 during a police operation in Diez de Octubre Municipality, Havana. According to reports from his family at that time, the agents did not allow him to enter his home or notify his wife before taking him away.
His arrest occurred after he posted a video on May 24 in which he toured an abandoned military facility in Havana, where he showcased old Soviet missiles, radars, and Cold War-era bunkers. The content garnered around 68,000 views before his arrest.
Initially, the authorities informed the family that he would be prosecuted for "invasion of military property." The legal advisory organization Cubalex later warned that this criminal charge does not exist in the current penal codes and described what happened as a "flagrant violation of the principle of legality."
Subsequently, the investigation was linked to the alleged crime of "revelation of secrets concerning State Security," as outlined in Article 116 of the Penal Code. The case is under military jurisdiction.
One hundred days of appeals and complaints
During these past three months, the family has reported numerous obstacles and alleged irregularities in the process.
In June, his mother reported that Ceballos had been physically assaulted during his detention. Subsequently, his relatives reported restrictions on visits and a nighttime transfer to an interrogation center.
In August, a request to modify the preventive custody measure was rejected, and additionally, the family reported that a new complaint had been denied.
From prison, Ceballos denied the accusations in a letter dated August 1: "I am an artist, not a spy".
Christian Rodríguez Riverón, a cameraman who took part in the recording of the video, was also detained by State Security and is currently held at "El Reloj Club" in Boyeros, facing charges related to the same case.
Ceballos' wife, Daniela Escarra, has publicly denounced his imprisonment as a political case and has launched the campaign "Free Eddy" to demand his release.
"They are trying to turn him into an example to send a message of fear," he stated in July.
The case occurs in a country that ranks 160 out of 180 in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, the second worst position in America.
After 100 days without a trial date being set, Marieta Pérez Alfaro insisted on seeking guarantees for her son and reminded everyone of the human cost behind the process.
"We are not figures, numbers, or cases; we are people who deserve respect, dignity, and justice," he concluded.
