A motorcyclist lost his life this Saturday after crashing into a column at the roundabout leading to Saratoga and La Norma, in the city of Camagüey, where a woman traveling with him also sustained serious injuries, reported journalist José Luis Tan Estrada.
According to the initial information, the driver allegedly attempted a turn without stopping and lost control of the motorcycle. A witness who passed by just seconds before the impact described that the bike was traveling at about 70 km/h, and that the passenger, seeing that they had no time to make the turn, held onto the driver just before the crash. "I only felt the impact because the bushes didn’t let me see," they recounted.
Two ambulances were seen in the emergency department heading to the Amalia Simoni hospital, the main trauma center in the province. Shortly after, in a second post, Tan confirmed that the man had passed away.
According to comments from neighbors, she was a resident of Port-au-Prince. The woman remained in a delicate condition.
The impact was described as brutal by those who arrived at the scene moments later. "The motorcycle was crushed," wrote a resident who passed through the area after the incident.
Another commentator noted that, in addition to the two occupants of the motorcycle, a pastry vendor who had his stand at that corner was also reported to be injured after being struck by the vehicle.
Several citizens pointed to deficiencies in the signage as an aggravating factor. "There’s a missing sign, it seems someone mischievous took it; that sign is poorly visible and very confusing," wrote a neighbor who had passed through the area the day before.
Others agreed that the Yield sign at that roundabout is rarely respected. The irony was not lost on anyone, as the accident happened in front of a traffic classroom.
Citizen frustration over the traffic chaos was reflected in the comments. "Driving has become a challenge: drivers turn without signaling, electric scooters own the street, in short, it's madness," wrote one user.
Another summed up the feelings of many: "Camagüey does not rest; there are accidents every day."
The incident adds to a series of recent tragic road accidents on the island. At the end of August, a young man died in Pinar del Río following a moped accident. Days earlier, another young man lost his life in Santiago de Cuba while riding without a helmet.
At the national level, Cuba recorded 750 fatalities in traffic accidents during 2025, compared to 634 in 2024, with motorcycles and mopeds involved in 63% of the incidents.
