A crowd of motorcyclists, drivers, and neighbors gathered this Sunday in front of the San Juan Methodist Church in Santiago de Cuba to participate in a day of prayer dedicated to seeking protection from the dangers of the roads.
Pastor Darlon Bermúdez, the leader of the congregation, shared images of the gathering, held under the name «Culto AVIVADRIVER».
«Multitudes of drivers and all types of vehicles gathered in front of our Temple to cry out to God for protection on the road, many of them received Christ as their Only Savior,» wrote Bermúdez in a context where accidents and assaults on the roads have increased.
In one of the shared images, several participants are seen raising their helmets during the ceremony, a scene that reflects the central purpose of the gathering: to seek protection for those who travel on the roads every day.
The communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada also documented the gathering and noted that the event took place at the San Juan Methodist Church, on San Pedro Street, with the participation of motorcyclists, drivers, and local residents.
This is not the first time that Bermúdez and this congregation have dedicated a religious celebration to those traveling through the streets of Santiago.
In May 2024, a large group of motorcyclists gathered in front of the same church to ask God for their protection.
On that occasion, Bermúdez championed the initiative, blessed the vehicles, and anointed motorcycles and helmets.
Since then, the concern for the safety of those traveling on motorcycles, mopeds, and other vehicles has become even more pronounced.
In 2025, Cuba recorded 7,538 traffic accidents and 750 fatalities, as well as 6,718 injured individuals.
Motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians were involved in 63% of the accidents.
This danger is compounded by the deterioration of public safety. The Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC), an independent organization, documented 2,833 crimes in Cuba during 2025, a 115% increase from 2024.
Of these, 1,536 were robberies, while Santiago de Cuba ranked as the fourth province with the highest number of documented cases, totaling 323.
One of the most serious incidents that occurred this year was the murder of Ramón Orlando Martínez, who was stabbed and died during a robbery attempt to steal his electric tricycle on Avenida Las Américas, one of the main thoroughfares in Santiago de Cuba.
The vehicle was also his means of work as a knife sharpener.
Also in the capital of Santiago, in December 2025, a young man reported that he was violently beaten and robbed of his motorcycle while passing by the entrance of Salao.
