A collision between a modern car and an electric tricycle left at least two people injured this Sunday in Varadero, near the Oasis hotel, at the entrance to the Hicacos Peninsula in the province of Matanzas.
The report was published by citizen journalist Christian Arbolaez on Facebook, who initially confirmed two injuries: “a woman with an arm injury and a young man who was also injured.”
Images of the accident show an electric tricycle wedged on a bridge and an SUV—possibly a Hyundai Tucson—next to the guardrail. On the pavement lies the windshield that came off the tricycle during the impact, while the car displays visible damage to the front.
"For now, no further details about his health status or the circumstances of the accident are known," Arbolaez specified in his publication.
The accident occurred in a mixed traffic area where high-end tourist vehicles coexist with popular modes of transport, such as electric tricycles and bicycle taxis, which operate informally in the resort.
In recent months, multiple accidents involving motorcycles and electric tricycles have been reported in the country. In the Varadero area itself, a cyclist was gravely injured after colliding with a car on the Varadero-Cárdenas road at the end of July.
In June, a woman died and several were injured when an electric tricycle overturned, and that same month another tricycle accident in Regla left several people injured, including a young woman with facial injuries.
A Violent Collision in Centro Habana between a taxi, an electric tricycle, and a bike taxi resulted in two fatalities.
The official figures for the first quarter of 2026 highlight the severity of the issue: according to the National Road Safety Commission, Cuba recorded 1,234 accidents, 153 fatalities, and 1,154 injuries during that period, with motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians accounting for 74% of the incidents.
Cuban authorities have pointed to speeding, disregard for signals, and deteriorated road infrastructure as factors exacerbating accidents, although the proliferation of light vehicles without proper regulation remains an ongoing problem with no solution in sight.
