A Cuban mother who emigrated to Germany made a surprise entrance into her daughter's classroom at a school in Cuba, resulting in a reunion that touched the hearts of thousands on social media. The girl, upon seeing her mother appear at the classroom door, ran out and jumped into her arms in front of the entire class and the teachers, in a scene filled with emotion that the user @stephani_1998 posted on TikTok last Friday.
The video, lasting only 52 seconds, features a song about the nostalgia of those who emigrate, the separation from family and friends, and the longing to return one day to the country they left behind.
The hashtags of the video —#familiacubana, #madreehija, and #cubanosenalemania— indicate that Stephani resides in Germany, one of the European destinations of the Cuban diaspora.
That country recorded a significant increase in asylum applications from Cuban citizens: in the first half of 2023, they multiplied by eight, rising from 73 to 607, according to data from the German Ministry of the Interior.
Stephani's reunion with her daughter adds to other videos shared on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, in which Cuban emigrants return to the island unexpectedly and have heartfelt encounters with their children, some of them taking place in school settings.

Behind these videos lies a reality that has affected numerous Cuban families in recent years: emigration and the prolonged separation of parents, children, and other relatives.
The reactions of children upon unexpectedly seeing their parents—tears, hugs, and running into their arms—transform these scenes into a demonstration of the human impact that family separation has amidst the Cuban migration exodus.
On September 16, another Cuban returned as a surprise after four years of separation and experienced a reunion that also circulated widely on social media.
