A 44-year-old woman died and seven other people were injured in an accident that occurred this Thursday on the Bartolomé Masó highway, near Cujabo, in the province of Granma.
The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Granma, Yudelkis Ortiz, reported on Facebook that the victim was identified as Leticia Pérez González.
According to the explanation, the other seven people involved in the accident were out of danger at the time of the report and were receiving medical care at various institutions in the province.
The injured were taken to the Río Yara Polyclinic in Bartolomé Masó; to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital; and to the Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo.
Ortiz noted that he went to the scene of the accident, where paramedics, Interior Ministry officials, and other individuals were present.
The leader also indicated that she visited the home of the deceased and expressed her condolences to the family members.
The causes of the accident are under investigation and so far no further details have been disclosed regarding the circumstances in which it occurred.
Despite the fact that fuel shortages significantly affect transportation in Cuba, traffic accidents continue to result in fatalities and numerous injuries in various provinces across the country.
One of the most recent cases occurred on September 4 in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín, where an accident involving a handmade tractor left at least three dead and five injured.
According to the information released, the vehicle struck a motorcycle and then ended up crashing into several trees.
Days earlier, on August 31, a young man died in Pinar del Río due to the severe injuries sustained in a scooter accident.
The young man had initially survived the accident and underwent surgery, but later he passed away.
Moreover, official figures reflect the magnitude of the problem: Cuba recorded 7,538 traffic accidents in 2025, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries.
During the first quarter of 2026 there had already been 1,234 accidents, 153 fatalities, and 1,154 injuries, with a significant presence of motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians among those involved.
