A 44-year-old woman died and seven other people were injured in an accident that occurred this Thursday on the Bartolomé Masó highway, near Cujabo, in the province of Granma.
The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Granma, Yudelkis Ortiz, announced on Facebook that the deceased woman was identified as Leticia Pérez González.
According to the explanation, the other seven individuals involved in the accident were out of danger at the time of the report and were receiving medical attention at various institutions in the province.
The injured were transferred to the Río Yara Polyclinic in Bartolomé Masó; to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital; and to the Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo.
Ortiz stated that he went to the scene of the accident, where paramedics, officials from the Ministry of the Interior, and other people were present.
The leader also stated that she visited the home of the deceased and expressed her condolences to the family.
The causes of the accident are under investigation and so far, no further details have been released regarding the circumstances in which it occurred.
Despite the fact that fuel shortages significantly impact transportation in Cuba, traffic accidents continue to result in fatalities and numerous injuries across various provinces of the country.
One of the most recent cases occurred on September 4 in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín, where an accident involving an artisanal tractor left at least three dead and five injured. According to the information released, the vehicle collided with a motorcycle and subsequently crashed into several trees.
Days earlier, on August 31, a young man died in Pinar del Río due to the severe injuries sustained in a moped accident. The boy had initially survived the incident and underwent surgery, but later passed away.
The official figures reflect the magnitude of the problem: Cuba recorded 7,538 traffic accidents in 2025, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries.
During the first quarter of 2026 there had already been recorded 1,234 accidents, 153 fatalities, and 1,154 injuries, with a significant presence of motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians among those involved.
