Two Cuban workers, aged 24 and 25, were victims of an armed robbery in Guyana while walking in an area of Eccles, on the eastern bank of the Demerara River. The incident ended with one of the alleged criminals being shot after a nearby resident who witnessed the robbery fired at the assailants.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 14, at around 7:00 p.m., according to a statement from the Guyana Police reproduced by INews.

According to preliminary investigations, the two Cubans, residents of Eccles, were walking through the area when they were intercepted by two men on different motorcycles. The assailants pointed a gun at them and took their belongings.

A 24-year-old worker had his cell phone stolen, while a 25-year-old had his wallet taken, which contained his identification document and cash.

A 41-year-old neighbor from the area, who was in a nearby house, witnessed the assault and fired several times at the suspects with a licensed firearm.

According to the police, the man used his licensed firearm and fired several shots in the direction of the suspects, hitting one of them.

The alleged injured assailant, 22 years old, managed to travel a short distance on his motorcycle before falling to the ground.

He was initially transferred to the Diamond Regional Hospital and later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he received medical attention. Authorities did not specify the severity of his injuries.

The second suspect managed to escape and is still being sought by the police.

During the investigation, the agents recovered near the injured man a wallet containing the identification document and money belonging to the 25-year-old Cuban worker.

Authorities are conducting an investigation into both the alleged armed robbery and the shots fired during the incident.

So far, the identities of the two Cuban workers have not been disclosed, nor has there been any reports of injuries sustained by them.

Other Cubans have been victims of recent assaults in Guyana

The incident occurs a few weeks after other episodes of violence reported by Cuban citizens residing in that South American country.

On September 25th, two Cuban workers aged 41 and 29 were robbed at gunpoint after getting into a car to travel to Wales, in the West Bank Demerara region.

On that occasion, the criminals stole cell phones, a watch, a wallet, and 8,000 Guyanese dollars in cash, before forcing them to leave the vehicle.

Days prior, a Cuban woman reported that six men on motorcycles had assaulted her while she was returning from work, an incident in which she lost her wallet containing important documents and sustained minor injuries to her leg.
