Lázaro Yasmany Izquierdo Duarte, a 37-year-old Cuban, died after being stabbed on Tuesday night in Guyana, and another Cuban citizen, aged 38, was arrested as a suspect in the crime.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on October 20 in a two-story building in Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, where both men shared a room, according to the Guyanese outlet News Room, citing a police report.

According to preliminary investigations, another resident of the building heard a loud noise and went out to check what had happened. In the hallway, he found Duarte lying in a pool of blood, with several wounds apparently caused by a sharp weapon.

Next to the victim was the other Cuban, who, according to the testimony gathered by the authorities, was holding a knife in his hand.

The agents found Duarte unconscious and urgently transported him to Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor declared him dead at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21.

The body was taken to Memorial Gardens funeral home, awaiting an autopsy.

The suspect was taken to the Golden Grove police station, where he remains in custody while authorities investigate the circumstances of the crime. So far, no information has been provided regarding what sparked the incident.

Another Cuban is stabbed to death in Guyana in less than a month

The death of Izquierdo Duarte occurs less than a month after another crime with similar characteristics in the same corridor of East Bank Demerara.

On September 26, Luis Ángel Rodríguez Guillén, also 37 years old, was stabbed to death during a fight with a compatriot at a shipyard in Land of Canaan. Both were working and living at the establishment, and the alleged attacker, aged 32, has been detained.

In July, Yudivian Cárdenas Amador Almagro, 20 years old, died in Diamond, and three Cubans were placed in pretrial detention for that homicide.

Insecurity has generated concern among members of the Cuban community residing in that South American country. In August, a Cuban living in Guyana reported several incidents of theft and violence against fellow countrymen and warned that migrants from the island had become a “preferred target of crime”.
