Bodum recalls 5.9 million French press coffee makers due to burn risk

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday the recall of 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes, after reporting 70 instances of carafes breaking during use and 48 cases of burn injuries to consumers.

The recall, voluntarily coordinated between the CPSC and Bodum USA, Inc., encompasses the eight and twelve cup models from the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya lines. The three and four cup models are not included in this measure.

According to the CPSC, the danger lies in that "the jug may break unexpectedly during use if it is cracked or damaged, including damage caused by using a metal spoon to stir the coffee, which poses a risk of serious burns."

The affected products were sold in stores like Target and Walmart, as well as on online platforms such as Amazon and Bodum.com, at prices ranging from 15 to 65 dollars, from 1974 to October 2026, making this recall one of the largest in terms of units for kitchen items.

The identified cause is the use of metal utensils to stir the coffee, which can scratch the glass of the jar and make it susceptible to breaking when in contact with hot liquids.

The CPSC urges anyone with these models to stop using metal spoons or utensils immediately and not to continue using pitchers that have cracks or visible damage.

The offered remedy is more limited than in other recent recalls: there is no refund or replacement of the coffee maker. Consumers must contact Bodum to receive a free branded plastic spoon and a warning label.

According to the CPSC, "the label reminds consumers not to use cracked or damaged jars or metal spoons to stir the contents, in order to avoid damaging the glass, which can lead to breakage during use."

To identify if a coffee maker is included in the recall, the name Bodum is engraved on the frame, the inner lid, and the glass carafe of most models, along with safety warnings. The CPSC provides additional photos and identification information on the official recall website.

Those who have one of these products can contact Bodum by calling 888-879-8213 from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Eastern Time), emailing Bodum3302@sedgwick.com, or visiting the official recall site to arrange the free remedy.

This recall adds to a series of alerts from the CPSC in 2026 regarding household products with burn hazards, including the recall of DR Power brush cutters following 19 fires and the warning about Power Quick Pot pressure cookers due to the risk of opening under pressure, also in October. In May, Costco recalled thousands of ZWILLING electric kettles Enfinigy Pro after reports of second-degree burns.
