The President of the United States, Donald Trump, described the results of the midterm elections this Sunday as "a gigantic step back in history" and attributed the strong decline recorded on Wall Street during the week to the Democratic victory, although he assured that the Republicans would return stronger.

"United States took a giant step back in history with the results of the recent elections," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social account, five days after elections in which his party lost the projected majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The president directly linked the electoral outcome to losses in the U.S. stock market, which he described as a "rocket" during his administration.

«Even the stock market, which has been a 'rocket' under Trump, suffered a loss of 3 trillion dollars in a single day», he stated.

Trump closed his message with a promise of recovery: “But do not be afraid, we will come back bigger and stronger than ever”.

His words come after the Republicans lost the projected control of both chambers of Congress in the elections held last Tuesday, a situation that has not occurred in midterm legislative elections since 2006.

Until then, the Republican Party controlled both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which had allowed Trump to have legislative majorities during the first two years of his second term.

Electoral projections granted the Democrats a majority in both chambers. The change will take effect on January 3, 2027, when the new Congress convenes. Until that date, the Republicans will formally maintain the majorities of the outgoing Congress.

In the Senate, the Democrats achieved decisive victories in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina.

The opposition also regained the majority in the House of Representatives, where they needed at least 218 seats.

Trump's reference to stock market losses corresponds to the decline recorded last Thursday, when the major indices of Wall Street experienced significant drops.

According to , the Dow Jones index lost 1,833 points, approximately 3.4%, while the S&P 500 declined by 4.3% and the Nasdaq fell by 5.5%.

The decline particularly affected large tech companies and businesses related to artificial intelligence.

Among the factors highlighted by analysts were concerns about potential restrictions on data centers and other regulatory changes under future Democratic majorities.

Despite the harshness of his words, the criticism from this Sunday is not the first reaction from Trump following his party's defeat. On Thursday, the president emphasized that his absence from the ballots explained the outcome.

“It simply wasn't on the ballot. If it had been, we would have won by a landslide!”, he wrote then in capital letters.

With that statement, Trump sought to distance himself from the Republican defeats, despite having repeatedly urged his supporters during the campaign to vote as if his name were among the candidates.

That same Thursday, he also directly blamed the Democrats for the stock market crash, claiming that the market had fallen because his political opponents performed well in Tuesday's elections.

In another post shared hours earlier, Trump described the stock market day as one of the worst in history and claimed that Americans' retirement accounts had incurred losses. He also pledged that the country would become "greater and stronger than ever."

His messages contrast with the statements made on election night, when he claimed he was willing to accept the results of the elections and expressed his readiness to work with the Democrats, although he warned that he would use the presidential veto against legislative initiatives he disagreed with.

On Wednesday, Trump posted an image of a red cap with the word "VETO", after having indicated that he would resort to that constitutional power if the Democrats pushed measures contrary to his agenda.
