A traffic accident that occurred on the night of this Sunday at the San Juan Bridge, on the outskirts of Santiago de Cuba, left a motorcyclist critically injured after colliding with a truck.
Witnesses reported that the driver, unofficially identified as Alejandro Cobas, 30 years old, was transported alive but in very serious condition to a hospital in the city.
Although his identity has not been confirmed, independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada indicated on his social media that Cobas would be a resident of the Granja José Martí in the Boniato neighborhood and that he was traveling alone at the time of the impact.
The exact circumstances of the accident have not yet been clarified by the authorities, although some locals claim that the truck involved in the collision was carrying bricks. However, there is uncertainty regarding the entity to which the heavy vehicle belongs, as witnesses have provided contradictory information.
So far, local authorities have not issued an official report on the incident. Details regarding the motorist's health status and possible causes of the accident are expected to be provided in the coming hours.
In recent months, Santiago de Cuba has witnessed several traffic accidents involving collisions between motorcycles and heavy vehicles, raising concerns among local residents.
In September 2024, a young woman was injured following a collision between a motorcycle and a truck at the intersection of Calvario and Heredia streets. According to witnesses, one of the drivers ignored the 'Stop' sign, which caused the accident. Fortunately, the young woman did not suffer injuries that endangered her life.
Previously, in August 2024, a truck collided with a motorcycle on an avenue in Santiago de Cuba, resulting in injuries to the motorcycle's driver. Additionally, in March 2024, two people were injured when a truck from the Electric Company crashed into a motorcycle in another area of Santiago de Cuba.
These incidents reflect a concerning trend in the region, where interactions between motorcycles and larger vehicles have resulted in multiple accidents.
Factors such as the increase in the number of motorcycles due to the transportation crisis in Cuba, disregard for traffic signals, lack of proper signage, and road conditions contribute to this issue.
