The Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Santiago de Cuba requested a 20-year prison sentence on Tuesday for Marcos René Vera, accused of the murder of Breezy Alexnay, the father of two infants, whose name was Guillermo Alexnay Céspedes Chacón, a crime that shocked the city just over a year ago.

La sentencia definitiva se dará a conocer el próximo 22 de julio, según informó en Facebook el periodista independiente Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

The trial against Vera took place in the Provincial Court of Santiago, amidst a strong emotional burden.

Family members of the victim attended the hearing wearing white shirts with Breezy's image printed on the chest, as a form of protest and remembrance for the crime that cost the life of the 25-year-old.

According to Mayeta's account in another post, Marcos René Vera, originally from the Los Pinos neighborhood, had previously been convicted of another homicide that occurred at the "Rapidito de Martí," where he stabbed a young man, mistaking him for a supposed enemy.

Despite the seriousness of the matter, the accused served only a short sentence, which acquaintances have downplayed as "youthful mistakes."

The murder of Breezy, according to the report, was the result of a conflict between Vera and a cousin of the victim, apparently motivated by disputes related to a woman.

Breezy Alexnay, who was not directly involved in the dispute, ended up being the fatal victim of an incident that did not concern him.

After the crime, Vera tried to flee the country, allegedly with the help of acquaintances in Cuba and relatives abroad.

Unofficially, it has been reported that he was captured during an illegal exit in the Pinar del Río area, although this detail has not been officially confirmed.

Throughout the process, journalist Mayeta denounced attempts by supporters both inside and outside Cuba to justify Vera's actions.

"No one should justify a murder," he wrote, in response to those who attempt to downplay the seriousness of the events by appealing to the youth of the accused or to alleged reprisals.

Now, with the trial underway and a 20-year prison sentence on the table, Breezy's family hopes for justice to be served.

In February 2024, relatives of Guillermo Alexnay Céspedes Chacón protested outside a police unit in Santiago de Cuba demanding justice for his stabbing murder. During his funeral at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, he was bid farewell with chants of "Homeland and Life".
