A tropical wave located over the northeastern Caribbean Sea is increasing its development potential and could affect eastern Cuba in the coming days.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, based in Miami, confirmed on Wednesday that the wave, identified so far as AL94, is producing downpours and disorganized thunderstorms.
"It is expected that this system will move west-northwest at 15 to 20 mph, bringing heavy rain and wind gusts to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands today, and across the Dominican Republic starting tonight," detailed the informative note.
"It is then expected that the system will slow down and turn northwest when it reaches the southwestern Atlantic by the end of this week."
The agency predicts that environmental conditions will become more favorable for development in a few days, and it is likely that a tropical depression will form when the disturbance is near the Bahamas.
Residents of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bahamas are advised to monitor the progress of this system.
The probability of cyclone formation in the next 48 hours is low, at 30%, but in seven days it increases to 80%.
The system is being closely monitored by Cuban meteorologists.
The NHC is also monitoring another active tropical wave in the Atlantic that shows a high probability of developing into a tropical depression, but for now, it does not appear that it will impact Cuba.
If these two tropical waves were to become hurricanes, the first to form would be named Humberto and the second Imelda, according to the official list of names for Atlantic tropical storms that will be used during the 2025 hurricane season.
