Social media users are reporting today, Saturday, the sale of prepared food in municipalities of the Granma province as a preventive measure against the advancement of Hurricane Melissa, which is already causing rain and flooding in eastern Cuba.
“Food sales are increasing in Bayamo. We remain prepared and alert in anticipation of Melissa,” posted on Facebook user Yanetsy Rodríguez Sampson, who shared images of food sales and distribution points in the provincial capital.
In Niquero, the communicator Luis Verdecia Ovalle emphasized on the social network itself similar measures, with the establishment of stalls for the sale of prepared food to the community, along with photographs of local workers supplying the centers.
The publications are part of a campaign by local authorities to strengthen access to basic goods amid prolonged blackouts and logistical challenges exacerbated by bad weather.
Residents of municipalities like Bayamo and Manzanillo report power outages since early morning and difficulties in receiving updated information.
The measure comes after the first secretary of the Communist Party in Granma, Yudelkis Ortiz, acknowledged that “sufficient measures are not being taken” in response to the imminent impact of the weather phenomenon.
“While reviewing our route, I've noticed places where we do not see a preventive atmosphere, preparation, and the adoption of measures. We are communicating with those responsible to take immediate action. The forecasts are not good, and we need to buy time. In foresight lies the art of saving,” posted the official on Facebook.
Melissa continues to impact the eastern part of the country with heavy rainfall and a risk of flooding, while authorities insist that the population remain vigilant and take extra precautions.
The meteorologist José Rubiera reported this Saturday that Melissa is now a hurricane, is rapidly gaining strength over the very warm waters of the Caribbean and shows clear signs of internal organization.
It is being considered that the danger is increasing for the eastern region of Cuba between Tuesday and Wednesday, with very heavy rains beginning much earlier, intense winds, and dangerous swells on the southern coast, and subsequently, also on the northern coast, as the system crosses and accelerates its exit toward the Atlantic.
The National Civil Defense Headquarters has established the Alert Phase for the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo starting at 3:00 PM this Saturday, in light of the advancement, intensification, and probable trajectory of the meteor.
In this regard, the First Secretary of the PCC in Holguín, Joel Queipo Ruiz, stated that the province is preparing "for the worst-case scenario" in light of the imminent impact of Melissa, which could cause a disconnection of the National Electric System.
