The driver of a motorcycle suffered serious injuries after being struck by a tractor in the town of Dos Caminos, in Santiago de Cuba, this Saturday.
The communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the traffic accident occurred in the late afternoon-evening, when the motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a pothole and a tractor that "was driving in the opposite lane" collided with the motorcycle.
According to witnesses cited by Mayeta, the driver of the tractor—known by the nickname "El Niche"—was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, which may have contributed to the accident.
He noted that after the crash, no ambulance arrived at the scene to take the injured person to the hospital, and they had to be transported in a private vehicle. He also stated that the police did not show up, according to information from his source.
Mayeta reported that “the tractor involved was transporting a water tank intended for a manager of the Paquito Rosales Sugar Company, identified as ‘Chago’,” and that this person, “upon realizing that the tractor was encroaching on the opposite lane and bore significant responsibility in the incident, (...) would have used his influence to avoid police intervention” and ordered that the motorcycle be removed from the scene.
In his post, the communicator demanded answers to several questions: “Why didn’t the police arrive at such a serious accident? Why were there no ambulances available? How long will influences weigh more than the life of a citizen? Who is responsible for the dangerous potholes that continue to claim victims?”
It was the injured driver in the accident, named Jesús Delgado, who clarified the details of what happened.
The young man assured that he is fine and recovering from his injuries, and warned: “We need to be a little more careful on the road, drivers should know that if there are potholes in the road, they should not drive against traffic, as this type of thing can happen when trying to avoid a pothole.”
He specified that he is currently hospitalized in the Provincial Hospital and not in the Clinical Surgical Hospital, as indicated in the publication, and clarified that it was he himself who arranged to collect "what was left of the motorcycle, to avoid this kind of gossip."
In another comment on the post, a cousin of his, identified as Alejandro López, stated that “there was indeed an ambulance and the doctors did very well with the little they have,” and he questioned the account of the events presented in the publication, labeling it a “joke.”
However, so far the authorities have not provided official information about the accident nor whether measures have been taken against the alleged perpetrator of the incident, which could have cost the motorist their life.
According to data from the National Road Safety Commission, from January to August this year, 5,025 traffic accidents occurred in Cuba -41 more than in the same period in 2024-, in which 502 people lost their lives and 4,516 were injured.
In seven out of ten incidents, there were victims, primarily due to vehicle collisions, which continue to be the “most dangerous” accident, accounting for 36% of all fatalities, the official report indicated.
