The Russian presidentVladimir Putin melted in praise forFidel Castro during theRussia-Latin America International Parliamentary Conference held this Friday in Moscow.

In his words during the opening of the event, the president said that Fidel “was simply a colossus” and assured that he was “a man who thought about the people every second, and not only about the Cubans. "I also thought about all of Latin America, and about all the people on the planet."

According to Putin, the revolutionary consciousness of the former Cuban ruler was focused “on the concern of achieving the common good and justice. He was a unique personality. “This is the type of people that Latin America breeds.”

In addition to Fidel, the president also referred to Salvador Allende and Ernesto Guevara as “selfless fighters for justice and social equality” in Latin America.

On more than one occasion, Putin has referred to Fidel as a"sincere and reliable friend of Russia".

The Parliamentary Conference took place precisely at a time when eyes are on the governments of Cuba and Russia, after theCuban mercenaries scandalhired for the war in Ukraine.

Recently, a spokesman for PutinHe refused to talk about the mercenaries on the islandand said that this issue was "the responsibility of the military, and the Kremlin does not deal with such matters."

However, the Russian ambassador to Cuba, Víctor Koronelli, stated thatboth countries are in talks to clarify the case, but while they continue to appeartestimonies of Cubans who were recruited for war and some claim that they signed “a contract with the devil.”

The scandal does not seem to make a dent in the relations between the two governments, or at least that is what the Cuban hopes, who announcednew projects together after the visit of Prime Minister Manuel Marrero to Russia last June.
