Amnesty International demands the release of Yoruba leaders imprisoned in Cuba for 9/11

Their unwavering commitment to their beliefs and their fight for a Cuba without repression has brought them suffering, but their spirits remain intact, AI said.

The human rights organization Amnesty International (AI) demanded the release ofLoreto Hernandez Garcia andDonaida Pérez Paseiro, two Yoruba leaders imprisoned in Cuba for 11J.

In a thread on its Twitter account, AI denounced the situation of the marriage of "Afro-descendant leaders and prisoners of conscience, unjustly condemned for peacefully participating in the protests."

"Their unwavering commitment to their beliefs and their fight for a Cuba without repression has brought suffering to them, their families and their community, but their spirits remain intact," he said.

The institution asked to demand the release of the couple.

Donaida and Loreto, president and vice president of the Free Yoruba Association of Cuba, respectively, were arrested for joining the 11J protests in Placetas, Villa Clara, and are being held in the Guamajal prison, in that province. She is serving a sentence of eight years in prison and he is serving a sentence of seven.

In October, Brian Nichols, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the US State Department,He demanded the release of Loreto, and recalled that he is in jail not only for being a dissident, but for expressing religious beliefs.

In August, Amnesty International denounced the situation of the Yoruba priest, who despite hisserious health problems, as he suffers from diabetic neuropathy, was taken from the hospital to prison.
