Amnesty International denounces the Cuban dictatorship before the UN Human Rights Council

Amnesty International has noted with alarm the Cuban government's response, which included mass arrests, the use of arbitrary detention and the implementation of a new Penal Code that intensifies censorship.

In a recent statement, Amnesty International has expressed its deep concern about the continuing human rights situation in Cuba. The organization has specifically highlighted increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly in the country.

Since the protests that occurred on July 11 and 12, 2021,International Amnesty has observed with alarm the response of the Cuban government, which included mass arrests, the use of arbitrary detentions and the implementation of a newPenal Code that intensifies censorship. These actions, according to the organization, show a worrying disregard for fundamental freedoms.

Despite the fact that Cuba accepted in 2022 the recommendation to guarantee dignified and humane treatment to imprisoned people, Amnesty International has receivednumerous reports that indicate a persistence of mistreatment in prisons, violations of the right to due process and the use of incommunicado detention.

The organization urgently called on Cuba to immediately and unconditionally release all people detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, including prominent opposition leaders, activists and artists such asJosé Daniel Ferrer García, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara andMaikel Osorbo.

Additionally, Amnesty International called on Cuban authorities to stop subjecting human rights activists and journalists to surveillance and arbitrary detention, including de facto house arrest. Cuba was urged to repeal the articles of the new Penal Code that criminalize dissent and limit freedom of expression, in accordance with the recommendations received.

Finally, the organization emphasized the need for Cuba to implement recommendations to abolish the death penalty and ratify several international human rights treaties without reservations.
