More than 85,000 Cuban migrants transited through Honduras in 2023, testimony to the unstoppable migration crisis that has affected the Caribbean nation since the end of 2021.

According to a report from the Honduran National Migration Institute, with a total of 85,969 Cubans were the second nationality with the largest number of irregular migrants who transited through that Central American country in 2023 bound for the United States.

Of them, almost 50,000 were between 21 and 40 years old, and more than 16,000 were children, the report states.

The country with the most migrants detected in Honduran territory was Venezuela, with 228,889, out of a total of 545,000 migrants of various nationalities.

INM Report Honduras

Although these figures are indicative of the exodus, they do not reflect the reality of the migration crisis.

Although the authorities registered 85,969 Cubans in irregular transit through the Central American nation, those who crossed Honduras would have tripled the statistic, if we take into account that last year almost 200,000 Cubans requested refuge on the US border with Mexico, where they arrive the migrants after a journey through Central America that begins in Nicaragua.

When migrants arrive in Nicaragua, they almost immediately begin the journey that takes them to Honduras in a few hours, and they cross that country without reporting to the immigration authorities, which is why the official statistics are so low.

In the last fiscal year, which ran from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, a total of 200,287 Cubans were detained at US border points.

Furthermore, so far this fiscal year, there are already more than 40,000.
