The National Migration Institute of Mexico (INM) detained a total of 163 undocumented Cuban immigrants in the state of Puebla in January.
HeINM organized a joint operation with various Mexican government authorities and detained 2,501 irregular immigrants of different nationalities in Puebla. Among them were 163 Cubans in vulnerable situations and other people from Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala and Ecuador.
The people rescued include women, adult men traveling alone and families, as well as an unaccompanied minor.
There are individuals of up to 36 different nationalities. 520 people from Venezuela were counted; 402 from Honduras; 315 from Guatemala; 319 from Ecuador; 212 from Haiti; and 163 from Cuba.
They also detected from Guinea, 89; Colombia, 76; Nicaragua, 75; Dominican Republic, 71; El Salvador, 69; Senegal, 28; Afghanistan, 24; Chile, 16; Brazil, 15; China, 14; Angola 13; Peru, 13; Chad, 11; Kazakhstan and Pakistan, nine each; Togo and Uzbekistan, five for each country; four from Ethiopia; Bolivia, Cameroon, Sudan, three respectively; from the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Madagascar, Vietnam and Yemen, two people per country and from Benin, Eritrea and Mauritania one person each.
After the verification operations, the migrants received assistance and were taken to INM facilities or to the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF), depending on the particular case.
The Attorney General's Office (FGR) opened investigations into the possible commission of the crime of human trafficking. There are five Mexicans who have been linked to proceedings for allegedly being involved in this crime. The authorities seized six vehicles and a property.
Mexico, due to its border with the United States, is at the epicenter of the migration crisis in Central America. Undocumented people arrive by land and by sea, with the aim of crossing into the powerful neighboring country.
This Thursday the Mexican Navy carried out therescue of 16 Cuban rafters near Isla Contoy, Quintana Roo, highlighting the critical situation that migrants face on their journey.
In December 2023, the director of the INM ordered the suspension of all transfers and returns of migrants in an irregular situation in the country due to insufficient financial resources.
The measure is temporary, and reflects the budgetary difficulties that Mexico faces in immigration matters.
