A tragic traffic accident occurred early Friday morning in the municipality of Guantánamo, resulting in one fatality.

The incident involved two motorcyclists who were speeding down the central artery of Ahogados and Crombet at 5:30 AM, reported the pro-government outlet Miguel Noticias on Facebook.

According to witness testimonies and authorities, one of the drivers struck a pedestrian approximately 65 years old who was crossing the street at that moment.

The impact caused the man's immediate death at the scene.

One of the drivers was taken to the "Agostinho Neto" Provincial Hospital due to the injuries sustained in the accident.

The other driver did not report any serious injuries, the report indicates.

According to data from the National Commission for Road Safety, there were 7,507 traffic accidents last year, a 12% decrease compared to the 2023 figures (8,556).

In addition, deaths decreased by 13% (634), and the number of injured was 6,613, which is 4% less compared to the accidents that occurred the previous year.

Authorities insist that the main causes are driver violations, followed by the poor condition of the roads due to lack of maintenance and the age of the vehicle fleet, which averages between 40 and 70 years.
