A woman of Cuban origin, mother of three children, was killed by her partner in the town of Langreo, in the Principality of Asturias, Spain, on Friday, January 31st.
The crime, which has shocked the community, occurred around 11:00 p.m., when Francisco F., 72 years old, stabbed his partner, identified as Karilenia, a 40-year-old Cuban woman.
The tragic incident occurred on Poeta Mánfer de la Llera Street, in the town of Sama, Langreo. According to witnesses, after an argument at their home, Karilenia went out to the street calling for help, followed by Francisco, who attacked her with a knife, inflicting fatal wounds.
Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the victim died at the scene. The alleged attacker was arrested and is in police custody, awaiting judicial proceedings.
Karilenia's children, from a previous marriage, were with their father at the time of the incident.
The victim had been in a "affectionate relationship" with the man for "very little time," stated the Government delegate in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, during a press conference on Saturday, along with the regional head of Operations of the National Police, Miguel Ángel Ramos, who also confirmed that there were no prior complaints.
“The anger, the pain, and the outrage over this machista murder make my heart simply broken,” declared the Asturian president, Adrián Barbón.
Furthermore, in his statement of rejection, he described gender-based violence as “that terrorism, which some shamefully deny and say does not exist.”
"The women and men who rise up against this murder and its perpetrator, who believe that machismo kills, assert with all our strength a fairer society, based on equality," he added.
In a joint statement, the Langreo City Council, the Principality of Asturias, and the Government Delegation condemned the murder and expressed their "strongest rejection," while also offering their support to the victim's loved ones.
The City Council also called for a gathering in the town hall square to express its condemnation of this new femicide and to show support for the victim's family.
This is the first case of gender-based violence recorded in Spain in 2025, following the murders of 48 women in 2024.
