The Cuban triple jumper Leyanis Pérez won the gold medal at the Nanjing 2025 World Indoor Athletics Championships in China, with a jump of 14.93 meters that confirmed her as the best in her specialty for the year.

The performance was complemented by her compatriot Liadagmis Povea, who secured the silver medal with a distance of 14.57 meters, marking a historic 1-2 for Cuba in the women's event, according to the website JIT.

Pérez, 23 years old and from Pinar del Río, opened the competition with a powerful jump that left the rest of the competitors without a chance, including the current Olympic champion, the Dominican Thea Lafond.

Just five centimeters short of her personal record, the Cuban athlete demonstrated absolute control from the start and even opted to decline her last two attempts, confident in her initial mark.

This result allowed him to improve upon the silver medal he obtained in the previous edition of the event, held in Glasgow, and bring a world title back to Cuba in this discipline after 17 years, when Yargelis Savigne won in Valencia 2008.

For her part, Povea, trained by former world champion Yoelbi Quesada, demonstrated solidity and consistency with five valid jumps, including another of 14.56 meters that would have also been enough to secure second place. The silver medal she achieved represents her best international performance as an elite category athlete.

The podium was completed by the Spanish athlete Ana Peleteiro with a jump of 14.29 meters. Lafond, on the other hand, had to settle for fourth place after reaching 14.18 meters.

With the outstanding performances of its female triple jumpers, Cuba's participation in the championship came to a close. In contrast, fellow triple jumper Lázaro Martínez had a much lower than expected performance, with a modest jump of 14.04 meters that placed him in 14th position.
