Accident between motorcycle and motor scooter leaves three dead in Santiago de Cuba

Three young individuals lost their lives in a tragic motorcycle accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday in the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The incident occurred at the central intersection of Morro Road and 11th Street, in Veguita de Galo, as reported by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada on Facebook.

Initially, only one fatality was reported, but as the hours went by, the deaths of two other young individuals involved in the accident were confirmed.

In a previous post, Mayeta identified one of the victims as a young man known by the nickname “El Brother,” who lived in the Mariana de la Torre neighborhood.

The identities of the other two deceased individuals have not yet been revealed, nor has it been specified whether there were other injured persons.

So far, no precise details are known about the causes of the accident, other than the violent collision between a motorcycle and a motor scooter that left a scene of significant visual brutality.

In the comments section, some internet users confirmed that it was a tragic and serious accident, with others mentioning that they knew the identified victim, who was described as "a fighter."

Orisel Álvarez Stivens remarked, "Rest in peace, Brother, as he was called. His name was Sandy, a good boy, a good neighbor. How strong, how painful for that mother, her only son, and for his little daughter. May God receive him in His holy glory."

Lianny Sánchez emphasized, "That is a very dangerous intersection. I lived near that corner, and while I was living there, I witnessed more than 7 accidents, some of them fatal. It's a very hazardous area. They should put up a stop sign or anything that could prevent so many deaths in such a grim location."

Aris Arias Batalla provided additional details about the incident on Facebook and identified the rest of the fatalities from the accident.

According to the report, there were three people traveling in the electric motorcycle. The driver, Félix Sandi Ortiz, 39 years old, and a passenger identified as Darilen Gonce Salas, 20 years old and a resident of Princesa Street #359, between Corona and Mejorana, were killed. The third occupant, Víctor Ernesto Baibir, 29 years old and a resident of Princesa #253 ½, between Padre Pico and Colón, sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital after being treated for just scratches.

The third deceased was the driver of the Jawa motorcycle, Leonel Bell Bravo, 22 years old, who lost his life hours later while undergoing surgery at the Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany military hospital, to which all those involved in the incident were taken.

Arias also indicated that beer cans were found at the accident site, as seen in images shared on social media. Authorities are investigating the causes of the incident, which claimed the lives of three young people on one of the main arteries of Santiago de Cuba.

Between January and March 2025, several traffic accidents involving motorcycles as the main characters resulted in fatalities and injuries in various locations across the country.

On January 12, a motorcyclist died in Havana after colliding with a truck at the intersection of 51 and 218 streets in La Lisa. According to reports on social media, two young individuals riding the electric motorcycle lost their lives instantly, although this version has not been officially confirmed.

One day later, on January 13, in Camagüey, three teenagers were injured following a collision between a motorbike and a horse-drawn cart in the Monte Carlos neighborhood. This incident adds to a troubling series of accidents involving animal-powered transportation, whose lack of regulation continues to pose risks on the roads of Cuba.

On February 15, also in Camagüey, an elderly man of approximately 70 years was left lying on the pavement after being struck by a Suzuki motorcycle while riding a motorbike. The accident occurred in front of the National Bus Terminal, and the senior citizen was transported with possible traumatic brain injury, causing concern among witnesses and neighbors in the area.

Another tragic incident occurred on March 27 in Havana, when a truck collided with a sidecar motorcycle in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality. Initially, three injuries were reported, but later it was confirmed that one of the occupants of the light vehicle had passed away. The event sparked extensive debate on social media about the recklessness of many drivers and the need to raise awareness about road safety.
