Several injured after mass accident in Santiago de Cuba

An accident in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, left nearly 20 injured after a passenger truck overturned. No fatalities have been confirmed.


A massive accident that occurred on the morning of this Friday in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, resulted in almost twenty injuries, according to authorities.

The incident occurred in the Irijoa area of Palma Soriano and involved a passenger truck carrying 19 residents, among whom were four elderly adults, according to reports from the municipal government of Palma Soriano.

The injured were transferred to the Main Emergency Unit of the area to receive medical attention. So far, no fatalities have been reported, only minor injuries that, according to official reports, "do not threaten the patients' lives."

The report states that the municipal authorities visited the scene of the incident, but the reasons for what happened have not yet been clarified.

The images shared on social media show the overturned truck alongside the road, and the injured inside the medical facility.

This incident occurs a day after a young motorcyclist died near the Antonio Maceo Plaza in Santiago de Cuba, following a collision between a motorcycle and a pedicab that was requesting to proceed while transporting an underage girl who was under the influence of drugs.

According to local sources reported to journalist Yosmany Mayeta, the motorcycle was requesting a right of way, but the driver was going with the green light, and at that moment, they collided.

The young man, 30 years old and identified as Miguel Argüelles, is said to have died instantly after lying in the street.

Although the year 2025 began with a decrease in the number of traffic accidents in Cuba compared to January of the previous year, the number of fatalities increased.

At the end of January, there were 87 fewer accidents (422) and two fewer injuries (552) compared to the same period in 2024.

However, the death toll has risen, reaching 65 fatalities, six more than in 2024.

The most common type of accident continues to be collisions between vehicles, with 260 cases, 28 fatalities, and 226 injuries. This is followed by rollovers, with 67 accidents, 13 deaths, and 125 injuries, as well as pedestrian accidents, with 66 incidents, 9 fatalities, and 63 injuries.
