A serious traffic accident occurred on Monday night at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 10th Street in the Miramar neighborhood of the Playa municipality, resulting in several injuries, although none were reported to be in serious condition, according to witnesses and family members on social media.
The incident involved a white van and a Kia Picanto car, which ended up crashing into the perimeter wall of the Angolan embassy in Cuba.
The images of the location shared in the Facebook group 'Accidents Automotive in Cuba' show the severe damage to the front of the van and debris from the accident scattered across the road. The scene was cordoned off by the police while emergency services attended to the injured.
"I passed by the place at 8 p.m. and it was tough, the impact was strong," wrote a witness in the comments. Other users confirmed that those involved were attended to quickly and, fortunately, there were no fatalities. "They had serious injuries, but their lives are not in danger," stated a relative of the occupants of the Kia.
One of the comments noted that one of the passengers in the van was also injured. Several internet users expressed their concern about the frequency of these types of accidents and called for greater responsibility behind the wheel. “It's always due to someone's negligence. How many tragedies could be avoided if everyone drove with all their senses alert,” commented one user.
Traffic in the area was closed for several hours due to the severity of the accident. So far, authorities have not provided an official statement regarding the causes of the incident.
Fifth Avenue, the elegant and dangerous artery of Havana
Fifth Avenue, where the accident occurred, is one of the most emblematic, busy, and symbolic arteries of Havana.
Its wide and tree-lined layout connects important areas of west Havana and runs through the elegant Miramar neighborhood, a former residential area for the Havana elite during the republic, whose stately mansions now serve as embassies, diplomatic residences, foreign company headquarters, and joint ventures.
Despite its elegance, the road has frequently been the scene of traffic accidents, many of which have resulted in tragic outcomes.
In just the past year, several incidents have marked its history: in August 2024, a motorcyclist lost their life after being violently struck; in January, there was a multiple collision involving several vehicles; and in September, a diplomatic car collided with a military vehicle in the middle of the road.
Incidents have also been reported involving overturned vehicles, collisions with trees and electric poles, as well as collisions caused by speeding or reckless driving. The combination of dense traffic, minimal effective surveillance, and stretches of high-speed road makes this avenue a critical point for road safety in Havana.
