A traffic accident occurred this Tuesday in Havana, at the intersection of Vía Blanca and Paz, on the border between Cerro and Santos Suárez, due to a traffic light malfunctioning because of a power outage.

The report was made by the user Jorge Luis Boudet in the Facebook group “Traffic Accident in Cuba,” where he shared images of the incident depicting a black MZ motorcycle lying on the pavement, and noted: “This is what happens due to the power outages. Right now, I'm at the traffic light of Vía Blanca and Paz... God willing, there will only be material losses and no loss of life.”

Blackouts and traffic chaos: a deadly combination

The situation is not isolated. The widespread blackouts affecting the island also impact the traffic signaling system, with dozens of traffic lights out of service in multiple municipalities of Havana and other provinces.

This precarious situation increases the risk of accidents, especially at high-traffic intersections, such as the one involved in this new incident.

Solar panels: an incomplete solution

Just a few days ago, the Cuban government announced the installation of solar panels at 14 traffic lights in the capital, as part of a pilot project aimed at ensuring the autonomous operation of these devices during power outages.

However, the intersection of Vía Blanca and Paz does not appear on the official list published by state media, and the renewable energy program is still in its initial phase.

An inadequate and belated strategy

Traffic safety experts and local residents have warned that, while the measure is positive, it does not effectively address the magnitude of the problem. With an unprecedented energy crisis, where even hospitals and critical centers are experiencing prolonged blackouts, traffic signage has been relegated to a secondary level, with direct consequences for public safety.

This new accident once again highlights the collateral effects of the energy collapse and the lack of preventive planning by the regime, which prioritizes parades and symbolic events while the streets of Havana become constantly dangerous scenes.

Last Thursday, an accident at the intersection of 41 and 42 streets in Playa municipality, Havana, rekindled the debate about the deterioration of the road signaling system in the Cuban capital and the consequences of the ongoing blackouts.

The collision was reportedly caused, according to eyewitnesses, by a malfunctioning traffic light. The incident occurred at night when at least two vehicles collided at the intersection, where, according to residents, the traffic light has been out of order for several days. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although there was significant material damage.

Frequently Asked Questions about Traffic Accidents in Havana Due to Non-Functional Traffic Lights

How does the lack of electricity in traffic lights affect road safety in Havana?

The lack of electricity at traffic lights increases the risk of accidents, as many drivers do not respect traffic rules in these situations, turning intersections into dangerous areas for traffic. This has led to multiple incidents, such as the recent accident at the intersection of Vía Blanca and Paz.

What measures has the Cuban government taken to mitigate power outages at traffic lights?

The Cuban government has begun installing solar panels on some traffic lights to ensure their operation during power outages. However, the project is in its early stages and does not cover all critical intersections, such as Vía Blanca and Paz, where the recent accident occurred.

What is the current situation of traffic lights in Havana?

Many traffic lights in Havana are out of service due to the widespread blackouts affecting the island. This situation has led to an increase in traffic accidents, especially at busy intersections where there are no police to direct traffic.

What do experts think about the solutions implemented for traffic lights in Havana?

Experts in road safety believe that, although the installation of solar panels is a positive measure, it remains insufficient in light of the magnitude of the problem. The energy crisis in Cuba is so severe that even essential services like hospitals experience prolonged blackouts.
