Sania Casanova, daughter of the glory of Cuban sports Giraldo Casanova, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 41, following a long battle with cancer.

The news was confirmed by relatives of the family, who had reported that Casanova's health was critical this Friday.

Jacinto Carcedo Pérez, a family friend, detailed that Sania passed away at 7:30 am at the Abel Santamaría Provincial Hospital, where she had been admitted after her health had declined.

"I have been a firsthand witness to one of the most dramatic, epic, and glorious battles ever staged by a person fighting valiantly against the harsh fate life dealt her. Sania Casanova was not defeated by this wicked illness, for a woman of her heroic lineage does not deserve to be called defeated," wrote Carcedo.

A Sania, her son Lázaro Páez Casanova, who has experience in two National Series with his team from Pinar del Río and is a baseball prospect in the country.

The funeral for the woman has been scheduled for this Sunday at 9:00 am, as decided by the family.

Luis Giraldo Casanova, known as The Baseball Man, was a member of the national teams for 13 consecutive years.

He was a power hitter with exceptional consistency, as well as a very versatile player. He was part of the Pinar del Río teams Vegueros and Pinar del Río, as well as the Cuban National Baseball Team.
