The President of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Russian counterpart, Vladímir Putin, held a phone conversation on Thursday that ended without progress toward a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.

In a brief message on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump, who during his campaign claimed he would end that war in days, announced the dialogue shortly before the call: "Will be speaking to President Putin of Russia at 10:00 A.M. Thank you!". This post was later shared by the official White House account on the social media platform X.

On its part, according to EFE, the Kremlin reported that Putin reiterated during the conversation that “Russia will not deviate from its objectives” in Ukraine, despite Trump's repeated calls for an immediate ceasefire.

This was declared by Russia's presidential advisor on international policy, Yuri Ushakov, who explained that Putin insisted that Moscow will continue working to eliminate what it considers the "original causes" of the conflict that led to the current confrontation.

Sixth call of the year so far

The conversation lasted nearly an hour and was the sixth phone contact between the two leaders in 2025. According to Ushakov, Putin briefed Trump on the implementation of humanitarian measures agreed upon with Ukraine during negotiations held in Istanbul and stated that Russia remains willing to continue the dialogue with Kiev.

“Vladimir Putin emphasized that we continue to seek a political and negotiated solution to the conflict,” the advisor assured, although he specified that a third round of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv was not specifically discussed.

They also talked about Iran and Syria

The Kremlin stated that Trump and Putin discussed the situation of Iran's nuclear program and the crisis in Syria, emphasizing that Moscow considers it essential to resolve these conflicts solely through political and diplomatic means, as reported by the agency.

In contrast, Ushakov clarified that the recent announcement from Washington regarding the cessation of supplies of certain types of weapons to Ukraine was not addressed in this conversation, a topic that has generated tension in recent days.

The Russian presidential advisor confirmed that, during this latest exchange, the possibility of a future summit between Trump and Putin was not discussed nor was a date set for a new conversation.
