Health officials in the municipality of Moa, in the province of Holguín, assured that there has been no increase in respiratory diseases or skin ailments among the population, despite the recent visible emissions of dust from the chimneys of the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara Nickel Company (ECG), as reported by the community.
The information was released this Thursday by the Cuban News Agency, which cited a statement from the Municipal Directorate of Public Health indicating that the phenomenon, while noticeable, has not led to an increase in associated health issues so far.
According to the official report, a multidisciplinary team remains actively engaged on a regular basis to monitor the effects of the pollutants associated with the nickel industry, the main economic activity in the region.
The note adds that there are sufficient human resources available to address any health situation resulting from environmental exposure.
The statements come in the wake of citizen reports on social media, where users expressed their outrage over the presence of suspended particles, attributed to a planned technical shutdown for cleaning and maintenance work on the plant's gas ducts.
For its part, the Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed on Wednesday that the increase in dust is related to these actions, as well as to the deterioration of the gas cleaning system, a situation that —according to reports— is being taken into consideration within the entity's development projects.
As part of the mitigation measures, the accelerated repair of the electrostatic filters was mentioned, along with the reinforcement of contingency protocols to prevent environmental impacts on nearby communities, and the enhancement of monitoring systems.
The authorities emphasized that the company ECG promotes, as part of its regular operations, reforestation programs for areas affected by mining, as well as the installation of filters for reducing atmospheric emissions and ecological rehabilitation efforts with endemic species.
Nevertheless, institutional reports contrast with the perception of many residents, who claim that the air is increasingly unbreathable, that dust accumulates on roofs, patios, and household items, and that physical discomfort persists, even if it is not officially reflected in statistics.
As a result of this problem, the Cuban activist Yamilka Lafita Cancio, known on social media as Lara Crofs, launched a strong public denunciation against the Cuban government this Thursday through an open letter, in which she holds the authorities accountable for decades of industrial pollution and environmental neglect in the municipality of Moa, province of Holguín.
