A traffic accident that took place this Monday in Santiago de Cuba has sparked outrage after a Moskvitch vehicle hit a motorcycle rider and fled the scene as if nothing had happened.

The information was shared on Facebook by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, who detailed that the incident occurred at the intersection of Carretera Central and Paseo de Martí, when the car involved ignored a stop sign and collided with the motorcycle driver.

"He didn't stop at the stop sign and hit the motorcyclist, but the worst part was that he fled the scene," reported a witness from a nearby sidewalk.

The car, identified by license plate P240 147, left the scene immediately after the impact, which could constitute a crime of leaving the accident scene, an aggravating factor in cases of collisions with potential injuries.

Minutes later, after being located, the vehicle returned to the site of the incident, where witnesses who had seen the scene were still present, Mayeta emphasized.

The journalist did not confirm whether the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, although preliminary reports indicate visible material damage.

In the comments section, a user identified as Yoandri Payare provided more details about the accident: "The car ran the red light, and at the speed it was going, thank God it didn't hit him head-on. Since it was going so fast, the impact barely brushed against him from the side and knocked him down, but instead of helping, the driver of the car left. Thank goodness the driver of the motorcycle is okay; he only suffered damage to the bike," he wrote.

Beyond the deterioration of the roads and the lack of technical resources, it is not unusual in Cuba to witness an alarming behavior: drivers fleeing after causing accidents.

A driver who disregarded a "Stop" sign and caused a multi-vehicle collision in Las Tunas fled the scene without offering assistance, leaving the victims on the road until compassionate bystanders arrived.

In Havana, a driver collided with an electric tricycle carrying a family and fled the scene, while the injured remained on the pavement.

Something similar happened in Santiago de Cuba when a motorist hit a young woman and fled without looking back. The victim sustained serious injuries, and the individual responsible was identified days later thanks to images shared by witnesses.

In another case, a Moskvitch struck a cyclist in the capital and also fled the scene. Despite public complaints, there was no immediate official report, which fueled criticism regarding institutional inaction in response to such crimes.

In the most serious case, an elderly man died after being hit by a driver who abandoned him on a dark street in Havana. The attacker was arrested weeks later, but the delay and the silence from the authorities were pointed out as signs of impunity.
