Supportive Cubans have mobilized urgently to obtain blood donations that will help save the life of a fellow countrywoman hospitalized in critical condition in Mexico after suffering a serious traffic accident.
Magalys Arias Céspedes, 59 years old, was hit by a vehicle and is currently admitted to the CMNO Specialty Hospital in Guadalajara, with a diagnosis described as "serious and reserved," according to posts on social media.
Family and friends have urgently requested help from Cubans and other residents in Mexico to secure five donors of any blood type for the patient.
“[She] suffered an accident, [she] is intubated, everything has complicated, [she] has diabetes, [she] suffers from high blood pressure (…). The diagnosis is serious and reserved. But it would be great if you could contribute,” wrote on Facebook José Carlos Álvarez Santiago.
A family friend, Katherine T. Gavilán, pointed out that donations can be made from anywhere in Mexico, at an IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute), and she explained how to do it.
People can visit any IMSS across the country, declare the donation for the patient, and request an institutional email at: tsocial.bscocc@imss.gob.mx, so that the information can be sent to the medical center where the patient is located.
Finally, you must notify the number WhatsApp +616551908 that you have made the donation, "send any note or proof that confirms it to avoid ‘the loss’ and inform the family member so they are aware."
Gavilán indicated that if there are any doubts, individuals can write to that same WhatsApp or privately. “Please, share this information with any Cuban in Mexico who can help. We need 5,” he urged.
From Cuba, activists are echoing the aid campaign, such as Yamilka Laffita (Lara Crofs), who shared the request with her thousands of followers.
Cuban emigrants in different countries who have needed assistance to cover medical expenses and hospital treatments have been able to do so thanks to the solidarity of their fellow countrymen.
A humanitarian aid campaign driven by Cuban activists through social media made it possible in 2024 to save the life of the girl Amanda Lemus, who was taken to Spain with severe physical deterioration and underwent an urgent liver transplant, due to the public healthcare system in Cuba not providing her with medical care.
