Excessive speed was the main cause of the massive accident that occurred last Sunday in the municipality of Majagua, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, according to experts investigating the incident.

Lieutenant Colonel Niurka Valdés Figueroa, head of Criminal Investigation at the Ministry of the Interior in that province, explained to the official newspaper Granma that the driver of the Renault truck, with license plate B 236 623, lost control of the vehicle while taking a curve at a speed exceeding the limit, in the Río Grande area.

The medical tests conducted on the driver confirmed that he had not consumed alcoholic beverages, emphasized the cited source.

However, testimonies gathered by Granma from survivors indicate that the driver ignored warnings from several passengers, who asked him to slow down just before the rollover.

The official newspaper emphasized that eight people are still hospitalized, of whom four are in critical condition, two are serious, and two are under medical observation.

Preliminary reports indicated that three people died immediately after the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Maikol Dayán Torres González, 13 years old; Dairon Sarmientos Domínguez, 16 years old; and Lian Pazo Duanes, 14 years old.

However, just a few hours after the tragic accident, the number of fatalities rose to four, according to official sources. Yordanis Fernández Garrido, 23 years old, died in the Morón hospital.

Immediately after the incident, residents of Ciego de Ávila began to organize to donate blood for the victims of the mass accident that occurred in the municipality of Majagua, which resulted in a total of 33 people injured.
