A court in Broward County, Florida, on Monday sentenced Luis Manuel Rodríguez Toledo, born in Havana, Cuba, to three life sentences for the murder of Lázaro Marrero and Michelle Irias, which took place in 2022 in the town of Davie.

Circuit Judge Frank David Ledee issued the sentence following a guilty verdict rendered in July by a jury.

The crime in Davie

The incident dates back to November 6, 2022, when Rodríguez arrived armed at a trailer in Driftwood Acres Mobile Home Park, located on Southwest 47 Lane in Davie.

In the residence was Lázaro Marrero, his ex-father-in-law; his partner, Michelle Irias; and another woman who was severely injured.

According to witnesses cited by the police, Marrero was trying to protect his family when Rodríguez opened fire.

"Marrero was trying to protect his family from Rodríguez, the man who shot him," states the police report quoted by local press.

The agents found Marrero lifeless on the porch of the house, while the firefighters pronounced Michelle Irias dead at the scene.

Inside, another woman with gunshot wounds was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she survived despite the severity of her injuries.

Arrest and confessions

Rodríguez was arrested shortly after the shooting by the Davie police. Due to his suicidal tendencies, an officer used a Taser to subdue him. While in custody, he confessed to the officers:

“I just lost control... I was very angry with his family and I simply lost my head,” he admitted inside a patrol car, according to court records.

In subsequent interrogations, the accused explained that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had gone several days without sleep. He also expressed remorse.

"I'm very sorry for everything", he said to the detectives.

The next day, handcuffed at the HCA University Hospital in Florida in Davie, he confessed again: “I killed my father-in-law. How many years do you think they will give me for this? I don't know whether to laugh or cry,” he stated to an officer, according to reports.

Judicial process

Broward County prosecutors filed charges on November 8, 2022, and weeks later, a grand jury formally indicted Rodríguez on two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm, one count of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

After several postponements and hearings, the trial began in 2024.

Finally, on July 18 of this year, a jury found him guilty on all charges.

This Monday, Judge Ledee sentenced him to three life sentences, along with an additional 10 years in prison for the crimes of aggravated assault.

Pain and calls for justice from the family

During the court proceedings, the victims' relatives gave heart-wrenching testimonies.

Kelly Luna, a close family friend, described:

"It was simply painful. I felt all my body, it just hurt, it was a physical pain. Although I'm scared of the outcome, I know that God is the judge in the end. I know that no matter what happens, there will be justice," he expressed during a prior hearing.

After the guilty verdict in July, Michelle's mother, Sorayda Janania, was overwhelmed with emotion.

“She was a sweet girl. I am happy, I am really happy, thank God we received justice,” she declared through tears.

The couple's children also celebrated the ruling.

Jocylyn Marrero stated, "I tried to have faith in God and prayed for this day to come so that we could achieve the justice we deserved. I am truly happy that we obtained justice; today was a relief for me and my family."

A life behind bars

With the Ledee sentence, Rodríguez, who resided in Miami-Dade County, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
