A malfunction at the Naranjito electrical substation caused the automatic disconnection of several circuits in Havana on Sunday, leaving thousands of customers without power amid a severe national energy crisis.
The Electric Company of Havana reported that the outage occurred at 6:23 p.m. and affected substations in the municipalities of Centro Habana, Habana Vieja, San Miguel del Padrón, Arroyo Naranjo, 10 de Octubre, and Cerro.
The circuits were restored gradually following the intervention of specialists from the National Electric Union (UNE).
At 8:31 p.m., according to a second news report, most of the circuits had already been reconnected, although work was still ongoing in some areas to achieve a complete restoration of the service.
The Apolo, Melones, Cerro, and Talla Piedra substations were later reported as operational, with all their circuits closed and energized.
After recovering the substations, the Electric Company of Havana reported that due to low generation availability, they were forced to cut an additional 238 MW for emergency reasons, impacting both planned and reserve blocks. Block 1 was also fully disconnected.
