"Today, Puerto Padre mourns him with respect and affection. A master has departed, yes, but his legacy remains, which is none other than the lives he touched, the vocations he awakened, and the souls he helped to shape," Gallego wrote in his heartfelt post.

According to the comments, Leyva, beyond the content, instilled values, commitment, and a love for knowledge, cultivating a legacy that transcends the classroom.

Indeed, several internet users indicated that the death may have been linked to negligence related to the administration of insulin.

Death of a minor in Havana

A 13-year-old girl passed away during the blackouts in Havana after her family administered a dose of insulin. As of today, it is unknown whether the medication was affected by the lack of refrigeration due to the power outages experienced by all Cubans, or if it belonged to a defective batch.

"We don't know exactly what happened. We believe the batch was in poor condition. She was due for her insulin in the evening, and as soon as she took it, the girl collapsed. They had been without electricity for days," the source added.

"It was a new vial, not one that was already opened. That insulin needed to be refrigerated. The girl passed away. She had been diabetic since she was two years old," he insisted.

This source, contacted by phone by CiberCuba, confirms the information shared by a Facebook user who goes by "Mandarina Choc Choc" and claims to be a friend of the deceased girl's family. The minor was laid to rest, she asserts, "in a hurry because there were no means for a proper wake and it could not be prepared."

In June 2023, a Cuban mother reported that at the Pediatric Hospital of Marianao, in Havana, they gave expired insulin to her diabetic son.

"Moms, I want to share that I have a 2-year-old son with diabetes. Today, his dad went to get the insulin and they gave him expired ones. We've been giving him expired insulin for two months," said Bárbara Castellano in the Facebook group "Cuban Mothers in Cuba and Around the World."

The woman, anxious about the reaction that the expired medication might cause in her child, wrote to alert mothers who might be in the same situation as hers.

In March 2024, it was announced that Egypt would export to Cuba insulin injections for the treatment of diabetes.

At that time, it was revealed that Insulinagypt, human insulin manufactured in Egypt, would be supplied through United Company for Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of the Arab pharmaceutical group ACDIMA.
