Gerardo Guerra, 42 years old, passed away in the last hours due to the serious injuries sustained in the accident that occurred yesterday, November 10, in the town of La Caoba, municipality of Venezuela, in Ciego de Ávila.

The worker was part of the group of cooperatives from CCS El Fortín that were injured when the bus they were traveling in collided with a cart in the early morning.

According to Dr. Hecney Padrón González, a specialist in Intensive Care and Emergencies at the Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial Hospital, who confirmed this to Odania García Heredia, a journalist from Radio Surco, the patient underwent two surgical interventions due to closed abdominal trauma and multiple internal injuries but did not survive. He was reported in critical condition since his admission and passed away in the intensive care unit.

The accident resulted in 27 injured individuals, of whom 17 have already been discharged from medical care and are no longer in danger of their lives. Another five patients remain hospitalized in the orthopedics department due to humeral, tibial, and spinal fractures, while a young person is still in critical condition following surgery for abdominal trauma.

Two injured individuals were transferred to the hospital in Morón for neuro-surgical treatment due to minor head traumas, and a patient with an eye injury underwent emergency surgery at the ophthalmology center, where she is recovering satisfactorily.

The accident occurred around 5:40 a.m. on Monday, when a Girón bus transporting agricultural workers collided with a cart in the area known as La Caoba, in the Simón Reyes Popular Council.

The cooperativists were heading to their work within the “Fuerza Oriente” campaign, an initiative that has mobilized companies and entities from the province since the end of October to support the territories most affected by Hurricane Melissa.

As authorities continue to investigate the causes of the incident, the event leaves a deep wound in a community marked by tragedy and by the contrast between the solidarity that mobilized them and the loss that now mourns them.
